ਉੱਤਰ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਾਹਜਹਾਂਪੁਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਲਿੰਗ ਬਦਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸ਼ਰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਚੀਕਾਂ ਹਨ। ਉਸਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।

In Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, there is joy at the home of Shard Singh, who transitioned his gender. His wife recently gave birth to a son in a private hospital. Shard is the great-grandson of the revolutionary Roshan Singh, who was associated with the Kakori train incident. Two years ago, he transitioned from female to male. Earlier, his name was Sarita Singh.

According to inputs from India Today, Shard Singh began the process of transitioning in 2021-22. Although he was born as a girl, due to hormonal imbalances, his behavior was typically male. His personal choices, like hairstyle and clothing, were also masculine. This condition is called "gender dysphoria," where a person does not feel at ease with the gender assigned to them at birth.

In 2022, Shard underwent hormone therapy in Lucknow, resulting in facial hair growth and a deeper voice. Early in 2023, he underwent surgery in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, to complete his gender transition. After the procedure, the then District Magistrate of Shahjahanpur, Umesh Pratap Singh, issued a certificate confirming his male identity. He was given a new identity under the name Shard Roshan Singh.

After adopting his new identity, on November 23, 2023, Shard married his female partner, Swita Singh, who was from Pilibhit. On April 2, 2025, Swita was admitted to a private hospital after experiencing labor pains, where she gave birth to a son through surgery.

Shard expressed his happiness after becoming a father, saying that a son was born to his family after 26 years. He further mentioned that having children is a dream for everyone, and the circumstances under which he became a father brought him immense joy, marking the greatest happiness of his life.

Shard Singh is from the village of Nawada Darobast in Shahjahanpur and works as an assistant teacher at a nearby primary school.

**How is gender reassignment surgery done?**
Before undergoing gender reassignment surgery, it is confirmed whether the individual seeking the procedure has "gender dysphoria." This requires the assistance of psychologists and psychiatrists, who conduct long sessions to determine if the case qualifies as gender dysphoria. After confirming gender dysphoria, treatment begins with hormone therapy. This means administering the necessary hormones through medications and injections to the body.

Dr. Narendra Kaushik, in an interview with BBC Hindi, explained that the effects of hormone therapy can be visible after just two or three doses. Once the right hormones are provided, people start to feel better, their mood improves, and they begin to feel happier.

After hormone therapy, preparations for surgery are made. The individual must be at least 20 years old to undergo surgery. If they are younger than 20, parental consent is required. Additionally, the approval of at least one psychiatrist is also necessary before undergoing surgery.
