ਕਰਨਾਟਕ ਦੇ ਕੋਡਾਗੂ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਆਦਿਵਾਸੀ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਨੇ ਕਈ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਸਵਾਲ ਖੜ੍ਹੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ। ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਦੇ ਕਤਲ ਦੇ ਦੋਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ। 


ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਦੋ ਸਾਲ ਜੇਲ੍ਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਿਹਾ। ਪਰ ਹਾਲ ਹੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਮੈਲਿਗੇ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਾ ਮਿਲੀ। ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਦੋਸਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਟਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਥਿਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਕੌਫੀ ਪੀਂਦੇ ਦੇਖਿਆ। ਹੁਣ ਅਦਾਲਤ ਨੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ 17 ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ ਤੱਕ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਾਇਰ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।

35 ਸਾਲਾ ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਕੁਸ਼ਲਨਗਰ ਦੇ ਬਸਵਨਹੱਲੀ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨਵੰਬਰ 2020 ਵਿੱਚ, ਉਸਨੇ ਕੁਸ਼ਲਨਗਰ ਦਿਹਾਤੀ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਦੀ ਗੁੰਮਸ਼ੁਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਰਿਪੋਰਟ ਦਰਜ ਕਰਵਾਈ। ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਜੂਨ 2021 ਵਿੱਚ, ਬੇਟਾਦਾਪੁਰਾ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਅਣਪਛਾਤੀ ਔਰਤ ਦਾ ਪਿੰਜਰ ਮਿਲਿਆ। ਲਾਸ਼ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਇੱਕ ਸਾੜੀ, ਕੁਝ ਅੰਡਰਵੀਅਰ ਅਤੇ ਚੱਪਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਜੋੜਾ ਵੀ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ।

ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਦੀ ਲਾਸ਼ ਸਮਝ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ 'ਤੇ ਕਤਲ ਦਾ ਦੋਸ਼ ਲਗਾਇਆ। ਇੰਡੀਆ ਟੂਡੇ ਦੇ ਸਗੈ ਰਾਜ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਰਿਪੋਰਟ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਪੁਲਿਸ 'ਤੇ ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਸੱਸ ਗੌਰੀ 'ਤੇ ਦਬਾਅ ਪਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਦੋਸ਼ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਮਲੀਗੇ ਦੇ ਅਵਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਦਸਤਾਵੇਜ਼ਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਦਸਤਖਤ ਕਰਵਾਉਣ।

ਇੰਡੀਅਨ ਐਕਸਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਿਤ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ-ਲਿਖਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਦਸਤਖਤ ਕਰਨਾ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ,

"ਜਦੋਂ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਮੇਰੇ ਘਰ ਆਈ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਖੁਦ ਗੁੰਮਸ਼ੁਦਾ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਇਤ ਦਰਜ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣੀ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਬਰਦਸਤੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਦਸਤਾਵੇਜ਼ਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਦਸਤਖਤ ਕਰਵਾਏ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਜੇਲ੍ਹ ਭੇਜ ਦਿੱਤਾ।"

ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਦੇ ਵਿਆਹ ਨੂੰ 18 ਸਾਲ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਜੋੜੇ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਧੀ ਹੈ। ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਗੁੰਮਸ਼ੁਦਾ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਇਤ ਦਰਜ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਦੇ "ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਸਬੰਧ" ਬਾਰੇ ਪਤਾ ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਉਸਨੇ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਇਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਇਸਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ।

ਜਦੋਂ ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਜੇਲ੍ਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੀ, ਉਸਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦੀ ਰਿਹਾਈ ਲਈ ਕਈ ਵਕੀਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਪਰਕ ਕੀਤਾ, ਪਰ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਕੇਸ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਤਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਨਵਰੀ 2022 ਵਿੱਚ, ਮੈਸੂਰ ਦੇ ਵਕੀਲ ਬੀਐਸ ਪਾਂਡੂ ਪੁਜਾਰੀ ਕੇਸ ਲੜਨ ਲਈ ਸਹਿਮਤ ਹੋ ਗਏ। ਉਸਨੇ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਫੀਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਈ। ਉਸਨੇ ਚਾਰਜਸ਼ੀਟ ਅਤੇ ਗਵਾਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਿਆਨ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਅਦਾਲਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਿੰਜਰ ਅਤੇ ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਡੀਐਨਏ ਟੈਸਟ ਦਾ ਆਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇਣ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ। ਅਦਾਲਤ ਤੋਂ ਇਜਾਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਡੀਐਨਏ ਨਮੂਨੇ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ।

ਸਾਲ 2023 ਵਿੱਚ ਆਈ ਡੀਐਨਏ ਰਿਪੋਰਟ ਨੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਧਾਂਤ ਨੂੰ ਗਲਤ ਸਾਬਤ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਰਿਪੋਰਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਬਰਾਮਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਪਿੰਜਰ ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪੁਜਾਰੀ ਨੇ ਕਰਨਾਟਕ ਹਾਈ ਕੋਰਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਮਾਨਤ ਲਈ ਅਰਜ਼ੀ ਦਾਇਰ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਸਨੂੰ 27 ਸਤੰਬਰ, 2023 ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਮਾਨਤ ਵੀ ਮਿਲ ਗਈ। ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ, ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵੀ, ਉਹ ਜੇਲ੍ਹ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਿਆ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਲੱਖ ਰੁਪਏ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਮਾਨਤ ਰਾਸ਼ੀ ਦਾ ਭੁਗਤਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸਮਰੱਥ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਸਤੰਬਰ 2024 ਤੱਕ ਜੇਲ੍ਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਪਿਆ।

ਰਿਹਾਅ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਨੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ, ਪਰ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਮਦਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲੀ।

ਇਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ, ਇੱਕ ਇਤਫ਼ਾਕ ਨੇ ਹੈਰਾਨੀਜਨਕ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ। ਰਿਪੋਰਟ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, 1 ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ ਨੂੰ, ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਦੋਸਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਮਦੀਕੇਰੀ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਟਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੱਲਿਗੇ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਿਆ। ਇਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਥਿਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਕਾਫੀ ਪੀ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਘਟਨਾ ਦੀ ਵੀਡੀਓ ਬਣਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਜ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਨੇ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਸਥਾਨਕ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੂਚਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਰਾਸਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੈ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਦੀ ਪੁਸ਼ਟੀ ਕੀਤੀ।

ਜਾਂਚ ਦੌਰਾਨ, ਇਹ ਖੁਲਾਸਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿ ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਨਵੰਬਰ 2020 ਤੋਂ ਵਿਰਾਜਪੇਟ ਦੇ ਟੀ ਸ਼ੈਟੀਗੇਰੀ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਥਿਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ ਉਸਦੇ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਘਰ ਬਸਵਨਹੱਲੀ ਤੋਂ ਸਿਰਫ਼ 30 ਕਿਲੋਮੀਟਰ ਦੂਰ ਸੀ।

ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਨੂੰ ਅਦਾਲਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ। ਬੁੱਧਵਾਰ, 2 ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ ਨੂੰ, ਪਾਦਰੀ ਨੇ ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਫੋਟੋਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਵੀਡੀਓ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੌਂਪ ਦਿੱਤੇ। ਪਰ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੀ ਇਜਾਜ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਇਸ 'ਤੇ ਪੁਜਾਰੀ ਨੇ ਅਦਾਲਤ ਦਾ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਖੜਕਾਇਆ। ਅਦਾਲਤ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਸੂਰ ਦੀ 5ਵੀਂ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਅਤੇ ਸੈਸ਼ਨ ਅਦਾਲਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।

ਆਖਰਕਾਰ, ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਨੇ ਅਦਾਲਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਬੂਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਨਵੰਬਰ 2020 ਤੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਬੁਆਏਫ੍ਰੈਂਡ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਉਸਦੇ ਕਤਲ ਦੇ ਦੋਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਗ੍ਰਿਫਤਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।

ਅਦਾਲਤ ਨੇ ਮੈਸੂਰ ਦੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਸੁਪਰਡੈਂਟ ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂੰਵਰਧਨ ਐਨ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਟਾਡਾਪੁਰਾ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ਜਾਂਚ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਨੋਟਿਸ ਜਾਰੀ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੇਣ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਨਾਲ ਹੀ, ਅਦਾਲਤ ਨੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਥਿਤ ਲਾਪਰਵਾਹੀ ਬਾਰੇ 17 ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ ਤੱਕ ਰਿਪੋਰਟ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।

ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ 'ਤੇ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਵਕੀਲ ਪੁਜਾਰੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੇਕਰ ਮੱਲੀਗੇ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਅਸਲ ਮਰੀ ਹੋਈ ਔਰਤ ਕੌਣ ਸੀ। ਵਕੀਲ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਨਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸੁਰੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਝੂਠੇ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਸਾਇਆ ਸਗੋਂ ਮ੍ਰਿਤਕ ਔਰਤ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ।

A police action against a tribal laborer in Karnataka's Kodagu district has raised several serious questions. The man, named Suresh, was arrested on charges of murdering his wife, Mallige. Suresh spent two years in prison, but recently, his wife was found alive. Suresh’s friends spotted Mallige at a hotel in Madikeri, having coffee with her alleged lover. Following this discovery, the court ordered the police to submit a response by April 17.


Suresh, 35, lives in the Basavanahalli area of Kushalnagar. In November 2020, he filed a missing person report for Mallige at the Kushalnagar Rural Police Station. The police initiated a search for Mallige, and in June 2021, a skeleton of an unidentified woman was found by the Bettadapura Police. Along with the remains, a saree, some innerwear, and a pair of slippers were discovered.


The police assumed the skeleton was Mallige’s and charged Suresh with murder. According to a report by Sagay Raj for India Today, police allegedly pressured Suresh and his mother-in-law, Gowri, to identify the remains as Mallige’s and even coerced them into signing documents.


In an interview with the Indian Express, Suresh, who is illiterate but knows how to sign, shared that when the police came to arrest him, he explained that he had filed the missing person report himself. However, his claims were ignored, and the police forced him to sign documents before sending him to jail.


Suresh and Mallige had been married for 18 years and had a son and a daughter. He mentioned that he was aware of Mallige’s extramarital affair when he filed the missing person report but never mentioned it in the complaint.


While Suresh was in jail, his father contacted numerous lawyers for his release, but none were willing to take the case. Finally, in January 2022, lawyer B.S. Pandu Poojari from Mysore agreed to take on the case for no fee. After reviewing the charge sheet and witness statements, Poojari demanded a DNA test of the skeleton and Mallige’s mother. Upon court approval, the DNA test was conducted.


In 2023, the DNA report revealed that the skeleton found was not Mallige’s, debunking the police’s theory. Subsequently, Poojari filed a bail petition for Suresh in the Karnataka High Court. Suresh was granted bail on September 27, 2023, but he could not be released immediately because he couldn't afford the one lakh rupee bail. As a result, he remained in jail until September 2024.


After his release, Suresh requested the police to continue searching for Mallige, but he received no help. Then, by chance, on April 1, 2025, Suresh’s friends spotted Mallige at a hotel in Madikeri, having coffee with her alleged lover. They filmed the incident and sent the video to Suresh, who immediately informed the local police. The police detained Mallige and confirmed her identity.


During interrogation, it was revealed that Mallige had been living with her lover in Virajpet’s T. Shettigere village, just 30 kilometers away from their previous home in Basavanahalli since November 2020. Police presented Mallige in court, and on April 2, Poojari provided the police with photos and videos of Mallige. However, the police refused to let him meet her. Poojari then approached the court, which directed the police to present Mallige in the Mysore 5th District and Sessions Court.


Finally, Mallige admitted in court that she had been living with her lover since November 2020 and was unaware that Suresh had been arrested on charges of her murder. The court issued notices to the Superintendent of Police Vishnuvardhan N and the investigating officer of Bettadapura Police Station, asking them to respond. The court also ordered the police department to submit a report on the alleged negligence by April 17.


Lawyer Poojari expressed concern, stating that if Mallige is alive, then who was the woman found dead? He argued that the police not only falsely implicated Suresh in a murder case but also failed to properly identify the deceased woman.
