The 43rd match of the Indian Premier League between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Ekana Sports City Stadium on May 1, 2023, gained more attention for the heated argument that ensued between LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir and RCB star batter Virat Kohli than for the exciting game itself.
After the incident, there has been widespread coverage and discussion of the intense argument that took place between Kohli, Gambhir, and Naveen-ul-Haq. According to a report in Dainik Jagran, more than five days after the incident, Kohli wrote a letter to the BCCI officials explaining the situation that occurred on the match day. Kohli expressed his disappointment to the officials regarding the fine imposed on him and clarified that he did not engage in any behavior that warranted a fine from the board towards Naveen-ul-Haq or Gambhir during the argument. The incident was classified as a level 2 offense and was found to have violated the IPL Code of Conduct, resulting in both Gambhir and Kohli being fined 100% of their match fees.
As stated in the report, it was clarified that Kohli did not instruct Mohammed Siraj to hit Naveen ul Haq, the Afghanistan pacer, during the run chase. Instead, he only asked Siraj to bowl some exceptional bouncers.
Following the incident, Naveen ul Haq was fined 50% of his match fees. After the game, Kyle Mayers was discussing the events that took place during the run chase with Kohli, Naveen ul Haq, and Siraj. At this point, Gautam Gambhir intervened and removed Mayers from the conversation, which led to an argument between Gambhir and Kohli. Additionally, it was noted that LSG skipper KL Rahul spoke to Kohli and attempted to settle things with Naveen ul Haq, but the Afghanistan pacer refused and walked away from the two players.
