The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed apprehensions regarding the treatment of the former captain of the Indian cricket team in Bengal under the governance of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal has raised concerns about the Trinamool Congress (TMC) allegedly not showing appropriate respect to former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly within the state. They have requested that Ganguly be appointed as the Sheriff of Kolkata.
In response to Sourav Ganguly's recent selection as the ambassador for Tripura tourism, the BJP portrayed it as an attempt to rectify an injustice against a local icon. However, the TMC dismissed it as a regular practice and cautioned the BJP against politicizing the issue.

Sukanta Majumdar, the president of BJP's West Bengal chapter, emphasized that the government led by TMC in West Bengal has overlooked Sourav Ganguly's contributions and commended the government of Tripura, which is led by BJP, for appointing Ganguly as their brand ambassador. Majumdar additionally urged for Ganguly to be designated as the Sheriff of Kolkata.
Echoing this perspective, Dilip Ghosh, the national vice-president of BJP, censured the TMC for exhibiting insincere concern when Sourav Ganguly was substituted as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in the previous year. Ghosh questioned the necessity of another brand ambassador when the state already possesses an iconic figure like Ganguly, citing Shahrukh Khan's appointment as the brand ambassador of Bengal. He alleged that the TMC disregarded the sentiments of Bengalis.
In a rebuttal, the TMC cautioned the BJP against politicizing a customary procedure, asserting that it is commonplace to appoint film stars and cricketers as brand ambassadors. They accused the BJP of subjecting Ganguly to humiliation during his BCCI tenure and underscored that Tripura's decision was unremarkable.
Earlier, when Ganguly was ousted from his role as BCCI president, and the TMC voiced their astonishment, alleging political animosity by the BJP, the party was unsuccessful in persuading him to join their ranks.
Sourav Ganguly, a widely acclaimed personality, was previously speculated to be a prospective leader for the BJP's West Bengal division, as the party sought a balancing force against the charismatic Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. However, Ganguly has chosen not to venture into the realm of politics thus far.
On May 16, the West Bengal government enhanced the level of security for Ganguly to the Z category following the conclusion of his Y category security term.
